Winters in Champaign County can get pretty cold. On January 1, 2018, the overnight low reached -15°F, and only warmed up to -4 in the daytime... with several inches of snow on the ground too! At United Way we often receive calls from citizens who are concerned about the homeless in our community - "Someone should do something."
As a member of the Council of Service Providers to the Homeless, we are happy to share that many people ARE doing something! This winter there are emergency sheltering resources available for men, women and families in our community.
For the most current information, always dial 2-1-1.
Many of these resources work quietly and diligently to serve the homeless, with little publicity. That's why we want to take time to share them with the community at large. We also want to encourage the community to become involved. Visit CUvolunteer.org to find local groups seeking volunteers.
