Five-Year Special Initiative:
Social-Emotional Development in United Way funded Non-Profit Preschools |
Through a five-year social-emotional initiative, United Way of Champaign County is striving to improve school readiness for at-risk children in early childhood centers by strengthening center-based early childhood programs, enhancing teacher skills and classroom environments by offering training and on-site technical assistance, providing support to families of children in preschool, and providing the opportunity for children to receive more one-on-one interaction. United Way ultimately hopes to support parents and caregivers as they prepare their children for school and life. The social emotional initiative is a joint project with CCMHB/CCDDB (Champaign County Mental Health Board/Developmental Disabilities Board).
In a report made to the Success by 6 Vision Council on April 25, 2007, the Social-Emotional Initiative is reaching the end of Phase I. During this phase, experts in early childhood development analyzed the needs of each preschool through observation, conversation with directors and teachers, and student evaluation. Several needs were determined, including the role of a social-emotional consultant in each preschool over the next five years, further teacher training, training directed to each individual classroom and its needs, and continued parental and caregiver support. As Phase II begins in July, there is sure to be more positive change happening in area non-profit preschools.
