The 2020 federal tax filing season opened Monday, January 27. Don't pay to file your taxes if you don't need to! Nearly 70% of taxpayers qualify to file their taxes for free. Here are a few free tax filing options for Champaign County residents. The deadline to file your taxes is April 15, 2020.
Free Online Tax Filing
United Way has partnered with industry leader H&R Block to help people easily and accurately file both their federal and state taxes through MyFreeTaxes®.
MyFreeTaxes is the only free, national, online tax filing product offered by a nonprofit, because United Way fights for the financial stability of every person in every community. United Way is committed to ensuring that people can easily and accurately file their taxes to receive the refunds they deserve.
This year there is NO maximum income limit - anyone, with any income, can file a return for free.
MyFreeTaxes is comprehensive and includes most forms for simple returns. However, there are a few forms and/or special tax situations that are not supported by the software. If you need to attach a Schedule C for a side hustle/self-employment, the fee is $25. MyFreeTaxes does not support schedules A, D, E, F, H, K-1, or SE. If you need these forms, you may pay to upgrade to a different product; in most cases for a discounted fee.
MyFreeTaxes is powered by H&R Block’s premium software, so filing is easy, secure and guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Most filers complete their taxes in less than an hour. Nationally, we've helped over 1.1 million taxpayers claim every credit and deduction they're eligible for, bringing over $1.7 billion of refunds back to people!
Visit MyFreeTaxes.com from your smartphone, tablet or computer to start filing today.
The Department of Defense offers free tax filing and assistance through MilTax. It is designed to address some of the common tax questions related to military service, such as reporting deployment and combat pay.
Other Online Free Filing Options
The IRS maintains a list of private preparers who offer online free filing. Please read the requirements carefully, as not all free file products include certain schedules or state returns.
Free In-Person Tax Assistance
For taxpayers who need assistance filing their returns, two local programs can help. Please note, appointments are required and may fill quickly.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
Champaign County has one VITA site, hosted by the University of Illinois Gies College of Business. Highly qualified students in accountancy assist taxpayers in filing state and federal returns.
