Sue Grey selected as President and CEO

At a special meeting on November 1, 2012, the United Way of Champaign County Board of Directors selected Sue Grey as the organization’s next President & CEO.

Sue has most recently been the Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of Champaign County. United Way Board of Directors believe her experience in mobilizing volunteer and financial resources and creating collaborative environments brings invaluable expertise to ensure that the United Way continues to meet the evolving challenges and needs of our community .

Sue joined the United Way in 2006 and is no stranger to United Way operations. She has volunteered in many different capacities for the past 18 years. Sue and her family have deep roots in Champaign County. Her volunteer activities include member of the Champaign Unit 4 School Board since 2006 and President since 2011. Sue also volunteers with Champaign Rotary, Executive Club of Champaign County, Champaign Central High School PTA and Windsor Road Christian Church. In 2005, Sue received the Athena Award from the Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, Sue received the 2012 Woman of Distinction award from the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois.

Sue lives in Champaign along with her husband Tom Grey and has three children and two grandchildren.

“I am thrilled with the opportunity to serve United Way of Champaign County and grateful to the Board of Directors for putting their faith in me,” said Sue Grey. “I am honored to build on the work that Lyn Jones has accomplished here at United Way. Our work the past five years in creating new partnerships and addressing human care needs has established United Way of Champaign County as the community leader for advancing the common good.”

The process to select United Way’s next President & CEO began with the recruitment of an all-volunteer search committee. The process also included participation by business and corporate leaders, human resource professionals, community stakeholders and United Way partners. Robert W. Mulcahey, Board Chair of United Way, chaired the Search Committee. Additionally, United Way was very fortunate to retain the services of Stratum Med Recruiting to guide the process.

The Search Committee began a nationwide search for the position in August 2012 and received over 70 applications. The committee determined that the next President & CEO would need to provide leadership and demonstrated results, foster and build upon community relationships, possess practical experience in evaluating programs for community impact and be experienced in fund development.

“We are fortunate to have a candidate with these qualifications who is already as a member of our United Way team,” states Robert Mulcahey. “This view was reinforced over the course of the search committee’s efforts.”

“Sue demonstrates an extraordinary passion for United Way and its mission to service Champaign County. This passion combined with her long standing commitment to our community and history with United Way will contribute to her success as the next leader of United Way of Champaign County,” says Darcy Sementi, Chair of the Community Impact Committee for United Way and member of the search committee.

United Way’s Chair-Elect and member of the search committee, Glenn Stanko says, “Sue Grey’s deep roots in the community, her familiarity with our donors and agencies, and her work for United Way of Champaign County over the past six years made her an outstanding candidate for President and CEO. I am confident that Sue’s selection will give us the strong leadership needed to successfully advance its mission in this community. As the Chair-Elect of the Board, I am excited about the opportunity to work with Sue.”

Sue will assume the duties of President & CEO immediately.
